GETTING YOUR GOVERNMENT TO LISTEN (WITHOUT BIG BUCKS)

How Ordinary Citizens Can Make Their Voices Heard

Wednesday, March 28, 2007

Our speakers for this event were:

  • Tim Potts, co-founder and President of Democracy Rising PA and one of the organizers of the 2005 Pennsylvania legislative pay raise revolt;
  • Joe Hoeffel, recent U.S. Congressman from Pennsylvania’s 13th District and former Deputy Secretary of International Business for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Our moderator was Russell Bellavance, teacher of Social Studies at Great Valley High School.. His past career includes corporate law practice, Chief Counsel to the Pennsylvania Department of Commerce and Economic Development, and a former two-term Director of the Wissahickon School District.

A crowd of over seventy people gathered to hear the speakers discuss strategies for reaching lawmakers and reveal how to get lawmakers to respond. Mr. Potts outlined seven steps which citizen groups should implement when trying to effect policy change. Mr. Hoeffel provided the insider’s view of what captures the attention of our legislators.
